Operational Context
Maritime forces are required to operate in increasingly complex environments: congested coastal waters,
contested littorals, critical infrastructure zones and extended EEZs, often under persistent surveillance
and hybrid pressure. VARSOM works with clients to define:
- Roles and missions for high-speed interceptors, patrol craft and special operations platforms.
- Concepts of employment for USVs and UUVs alongside existing fleets.
- Architectures for coastal, EEZ and offshore infrastructure protection.
- Integration of maritime ISR and space-enabled services into naval C2 structures.
High-Performance Platforms & Special Operations
VARSOM supports the evaluation and integration of high-performance craft – including +100‑knot platforms –
for interdiction, special operations support and high-risk patrol missions. Our role is to ensure that
performance is matched by integration and survivability:
- Definition of operational roles and mission profiles for high-speed platforms.
- Integration of sensors, weapons, C2 suites and survivability features.
- Support to trials, demos and user evaluations in demanding maritime conditions.
- Interoperability with joint and combined maritime task forces.
Unmanned Surface & Sub-surface Systems
Unmanned surface and sub-surface systems are reshaping maritime ISR, mine countermeasures, logistics and
special operations support. VARSOM focuses on integration, not just platform selection:
- Concepts of employment for USVs and UUVs in coastal and blue‑water missions.
- Integration of autonomy stacks, navigation and control systems.
- Payload integration (ISR, EW, MCM, logistics and mission-specific modules).
- Command, control and data architectures linking unmanned assets to maritime C2.
Maritime ISR & Domain Awareness
VARSOM supports the design of maritime ISR architectures that combine fixed and mobile sensors, manned and
unmanned platforms, and space-based services. Key elements include:
- Sensor and platform mix for coastal, EEZ and SLOC surveillance.
- Data fusion and track management across multiple sensor types.
- Integration of space-based ISR and communications into maritime picture compilation.
- Delivery of actionable maritime domain awareness at operational and tactical levels.
Maritime Mission Architectures & Programmes
Beyond individual platforms, VARSOM works with clients to define integrated maritime mission architectures
and to structure programmes that can realistically deliver them:
Mission Architecture
- End-to-end mission design for coastal defence, interdiction and infrastructure protection.
- System-of-systems views linking platforms, sensors, C2 and space services.
- Pathways for incremental capability insertion and technology refresh.
Programme & Procurement Support
- Requirement definition and refinement for maritime capability programmes.
- RFI/RFQ strategy and evaluation of industry responses.
- Assessment of integration, interoperability and lifecycle risks.
Trials & Experimentation
- Design and execution of trials and experimentation campaigns.
- Operational feedback capture and iteration of concepts and architectures.
- Support to training, doctrine updates and transition to service.
